Roofing Materials in Fairfax, VA
Material choice is the second-most-important decision in a roof project (after contractor choice). The right material for your home depends on roof pitch, neighborhood aesthetic, planned ownership horizon, budget, and the specific climate stresses your roof sees (sun exposure, tree canopy, hail history, wind pattern). King's Roofing installs every major residential roofing material category and can give you a side-by-side cost-per-year comparison for your specific home.
Architectural Asphalt Shingles — The DC-Metro Default
Architectural (a.k.a. dimensional or laminated) shingles are what's on 70%+ of DC-metro homes. They're far better than the three-tab shingles of the 1980s and 90s — heavier construction, better wind ratings, longer warranties.
Our recommended brands: GAF Timberline HDZ (industry-leading wind warranty with StainGuard Plus algae resistance), Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration (SureNail technology adds shingle pull-through strength), CertainTeed Landmark (the longest brand history in the category, excellent color depth).
Class 4 impact-rated versions of all three are available for an upcharge of about 10–15% — and most homeowners insurance carriers offer a meaningful discount (typically 5–15%) on policies covering Class 4 roofs. In hail-prone DC-metro neighborhoods, the upgrade pays back in 3–6 years.
Composite & Synthetic Shake
DaVinci Roofscapes, Brava, and EcoStar produce engineered slate and shake products that capture the look of natural materials with dramatically better performance. Class A fire rating, Class 4 impact rating, no rot, no insects, 50-year warranties, half the weight of natural slate.
Synthetic slate runs $18–$26 per sq ft installed; synthetic shake $20–$30 per sq ft. That's 2–3× the cost of premium asphalt but only one-third to one-half the cost of natural slate or cedar. For owners planning 25+ year ownership, the lifetime cost is competitive with premium asphalt.
See our composite shake page for the detailed material comparison.
Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles
All modern asphalt shingles (architectural or three-tab) use a fiberglass mat as their structural base — the older organic-mat shingles were phased out 25+ years ago. 'Fiberglass shingles' is therefore an industry-standard term for the asphalt shingle category as a whole. See our fiberglass shingles page for a deeper dive into the construction, sizing, and warranty terms.
Standing-Seam Metal
Standing-seam metal is our highest-recommended material for owners planning 30+ year ownership horizons. 24-gauge Galvalume steel with a Kynar 500 finish carries a 30-year finish warranty and 50+ year structural life. Class 4 impact rating. Hidden fasteners (no exposed nail heads to wear out). Snap-lock or mechanical seam profiles available.
Installed cost in the DC metro: $14–$22 per sq ft. Higher upfront than asphalt but with the lowest lifetime cost-per-year of any major roofing material. Also the best material for solar-panel mounting (S-5! and similar clamps attach to the seam with no roof penetrations).
Natural Slate & Cedar Shake
Natural slate: 100+ year service life in this climate, unmatched aesthetic, $30–$60 per sq ft installed. Premium estate properties in Great Falls, McLean, Potomac, and Chevy Chase. Heavy (1,500 lbs per 100 sq ft) and requires structural engineering review before re-installation.
Natural cedar shake: 30–40 year service life with maintenance, traditional aesthetic, $14–$22 per sq ft installed. Increasingly restricted by HOAs and fire codes in the DC metro due to fire risk; many homeowners with original cedar shake are now converting to synthetic shake when it's time to replace.
Flat-Roof Membranes (TPO, EPDM, Mod-Bit)
For flat and low-slope portions of a roof — additions, garages, screened porches, row houses — we install TPO and EPDM single-ply membranes. See our flat roof page for the full breakdown.
