PVC Roofing in Burke, VA: Which Build Eras Left Flat Roofs Behind?
No document we opened says a Burke roof is PVC, or flat. What the Census does give is the year each part of Burke went up, and a flat roof from the 1970s or 1980s has already been through at least one decision. PVC comes after the question of what is on it now.

When did each part of Burke go up, and what does that date ask of a flat roof?
Homes by the year their building was built, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024, for the Burke place and the separate Burke Centre place.

Burke is a 1970s place and Burke Centre a 1980s one: over half of Burke Centre's homes, 3,526 of 6,247, come from the 1980s. More than 96 percent of homes in each place predate 2000, so a flat section here is more likely than not to be asking a recover question and not a first-roof question. That is our reading of the dates, because the Census records when a building was built, not when its roof was last done. Only a core cut at the roof says for certain.

What else marks Burke's calendar?
- 1951 to 1958. A second Washington airport was planned on 4,520 acres here, then placed at Chantilly. The land later became Burke Lake Park and Burke Centre.
- 1960. Kings Park began as the first large subdivision, per Wikipedia.
- June 22, 1992. The Burke Centre station opened with the Manassas Line. A large parking garage and bus stands followed in mid-2008.
- June 22, 2026. The county's emergency page quotes the National Weather Service estimating 90 mph around Lake Royal, with trees falling on homes. It gives no roof count, and neither do we.
Is the section flat at all?

First: what is on it
Count the coverings. Virginia's existing-building code bars a recover where there are already two or more applications of any covering, or where the roof is water soaked.

Third: which sheet, in writing
PVC is a thermoplastic whose seams are welded with hot air and is listed under ASTM D4434. Put that standard on the written scope.

Fairfax County Land Development Services, 703-222-0801. Its permit list does not mention PVC, membranes or flat roofs.

Is a PVC question even yours, and where does it start?
A Burke Centre condo or townhouse owner. Burke Centre has 668 homes in buildings of 10 to 19 and 201 in buildings of 5 to 9, against 9 and 108 in the Burke place. Burke Centre has five neighborhoods, the Woods, Oaks, Commons, Ponds and Landings, run by the Conservancy. Ask your own board what top each building has before assuming a membrane applies.
A Burke detached owner with a flat addition. 8,974 Burke homes are detached. The main roof is a separate conversation, and a PVC question is about a rear addition, a porch top or a dormer flat, and the layers question applies to that section alone.
After the June 2026 downburst. The county says its Land Development Services inspectors assess homes after incidents like this and that owners can request an inspection. Photograph first and leave the roof itself to a person, then see roof repair.

Which Burke buildings are most likely to have a flat roof?
Nothing we opened says. The Census counts buildings by size and age, not roof shape, so the 5-or-more-unit buildings and later additions are the places to check first.
Does the Census say how old Burke's roofs are?
No. It gives the year a building was built. A 1979 building may have been re-roofed since, and the owner's records say more than any table.
Can a new membrane go over an old flat roof?
Sometimes. Virginia's existing-building code bars it where two or more coverings are already on or where the roof is wet, so count the layers first.
What does a core cut tell me?
It shows what the roof is made of under the surface and whether the insulation is wet, which decides whether it can stay.
Does Fairfax County mention PVC on its permit page?
No. The page does not name PVC, membranes or flat roofs, so describe the exact scope to the office when you call.
How do I make sure a quote names the right sheet?
Ask for the standard on the manufacturer's data sheet, ASTM D4434 for PVC, so the covering is written down and not guessed.
Should a flat roof be checked after the June 2026 storm?
The membrane trade association advises inspecting low-slope roofs twice a year and after any major storm, looking at edges, flashings and drains.
