Two places, one name
Is your home in Burke or in Burke Centre, and does it change the roof job?
The Census counted 42,312 people in the Burke place and 17,518 in Burke Centre in 2020, and it lists them as two separate Census-designated places. Burke Centre is also a planned community, so it carries a layer the rest of Burke does not.
The housing differs too. In Burke Centre, 46.2 percent of the 6,247 housing units are attached, against 37.4 percent detached, and the median year built is 1983. That points the work toward shared-wall townhouse roofs.
What stays the same is the office. Both places are unincorporated Fairfax County, so the county issues any permit. What changes is whether an association also needs to hear about the work before the first shingle comes off.

The mailing address trap
Why does a Burke Lake Park address say Fairfax Station?
Burke Lake Park, with its 4.7 mile lake trail, is addressed 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039, and it belongs to no Census place at all. It is the clearest example of a rule that applies to whole streets near the edge of Burke: the mailing address and the jurisdiction are separate things.
A house with a Springfield, Fairfax Station or Fairfax mailing address can still be unincorporated Fairfax County. The City of Fairfax is a separate city with its own office. If your address leaves doubt, check the parcel with the county first.

Does the Silas Burke House make your Burke street a historic district?
Burke does have a few old buildings: Mulberry Hill, dated to about 1790 at 9417 Windsor Way, the Silas Burke House on Burke Lake Road, and Burke Methodist Church, from about 1857. They are register or inventory entries on a heritage list, and a listing on its own does not regulate your roof. Fairfax County's historic overlay districts are the separate zoning designation, created in 1969 with thirteen districts and later joined by two more, and none of them carries the Burke name.
The Burke Centre Conservancy is the body to ask if your home is in that planned community. Its covenants are not something we describe from here, so ask the Conservancy or your own association for the current exterior rules.

What does the Census say Burke homes are, and what does it leave out?
These figures are for the Burke place, from the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey. The Census counts homes, not roofs, so none of this records roof age or material.

Across 13,878 housing units, 4,622 date from the 1980s and 6,734 from the 1970s. Only 8.5 percent were built before 1970.

Burke Centre looks different on the same table: 15.8 percent of its units sit in buildings of five or more, and 4,825 of 5,977 occupied homes are owner-occupied. Condo buildings often have low-slope sections, so see flat roof work if that describes yours, and expect the building's board to be part of the decision.

What did the June 22, 2026 microburst do on Guinea Road and around Lake Royal?
The County's emergency page, quoting the National Weather Service, describes a strong downburst one mile northwest of Burke, with peak winds estimated at 90 mph around Lake Royal. The same page says trees were snapped, uprooted or lost large branches and fell onto cars, power lines, roads and homes.
Local reports add the practical side. Dominion counted just over 27,000 Fairfax County customers without power that evening, Guinea Road was closed between Zion Drive and Lakepointe Drive, and WTOP reported four utility poles down. News coverage mentioned some roof damage, and no one has published a count of damaged roofs, so we will not guess at one.
One detail that is easy to misread: the county fee relief that followed let homeowners drop off debris at the I-66 Transfer Station or I-95 Landfill through July 29, and it ended that day. It covered debris, not roofing work.

Why do the two VRE stations and the old airport plan matter on a Burke roof page?
Burke is a commuter place. The Burke Centre station at 10399 Premier Court and the Rolling Road station at 9016 Burke Road both sit on the VRE Manassas Line, which opened June 22, 1992, so much of Burke Centre grew up alongside it. A 1951 federal plan to take 4,520 acres here for a second Washington airport shaped what became Burke Lake Park and Burke Centre; the airport went to Chantilly in 1958.

The county side is the same, since both are unincorporated Fairfax County. The difference is the layer on top: Burke Centre is a planned community with a Conservancy, and 46.2 percent of its units are attached. Ask your association about exterior rules and the county about decking on a fire-rated roof.
My mail says Fairfax Station or Springfield. Which office handles my roof?
